The Pacquiao-Clottey fight made a world record on Saturday when a total of 50,994 people went to the $1.2 billion Cowboys Stadium to witness the fight first-hand–the third largest crowd for an indoor fight in boxing history. The biggest crowd ever for an indoor attendance was during the Muhammad Ali-Leon Spinks heavyweight title fight at the Louisiana Superdome in 1978, where 63,315 boxing fans came to see the show.
According to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, the original seating configuration for the Pacquiao-Clottey fight was only for 45,000 seats, but if needed, it could go higher. 42,000 seats were sold as of Friday, but stadium officials sold additional standing-room only “party passes” for $35.
In 1993, the Julio Cesar Chavez-Greg Haugen WBC welterweight bout at Estadio Azteca in Mexico CIty drew 136,274 people–the largest outdoor boxing attendance.
Only last month, a basketball world record was made when a crowd of 108,713 turned out for an NBA All-Star Game.
